Melissa Avery, M.A., CCC-SLP
Speech-Language Pathologist
Hi, I’m Melissa and I am passionate about helping children communicate effectively and confidently.
Since receiving my Master’s degree in Communication Disorders from the University of Texas at Dallas in 1997, I’ve practiced in many pediatric settings, including Early Childhood Intervention, outpatient clinics, and home health.
I’ve been a practicing Speech Language Pathologist for almost 9 years. My interests in the field include articulation therapy, oromyofunctional therapy, feeding therapy, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), and early childhood language and literacy.
I’m trained in DIR/Floortime, SOS Approach to Feeding, and Beckman Oral Motor Therapy, though I love learning and growing through continuing education in many areas of the field.
I live in Bastrop, Texas with my husband, father, and two dogs. I have two grown daughters.
From personal experience to professional commitment…
I first became interested in Communication Disorders as a young child, investigating how the brain processes different languages for an educational project. My interest was further piqued when volunteering as a reading tutor for young adults. Prior to becoming a Speech-Language Pathologist, I worked as a special education teacher for three years in Resource and Life Skills settings. I also spent several years “behind the scenes” in radio broadcasting.
Outside of work I love to read, do word puzzles, travel, and garden, but mostly I adore working with children! I value the trust parents place in my work. I truly believe in the power of teamwork (and play!) to help a child thrive, no matter what challenges he or she may face. It is a joy to serve my little ones. I would be honored to help your child thrive, too.
